Shooting involving trooper leaves suspect in hospital

A suspect is in the hospital after a shooting involving a state trooper on Interstate 10 in Tucson.

DPS officials say an investigation is underway, following a deadly shooting in Tucson involving a trooper with the agency on April 4.

What we know:

The shooting happened just after 12 p.m. in the westbound lanes of the I-10, near Park Avenue. 

In a statement, DPS officials said a trooper saw the woman walking on the right shoulder of the freeway, and as the trooper exited the vehicle to contact the woman, a fight happened, which led to the shooting.

"The trooper was unharmed in the incident and provided first aid to the woman," read a portion of the statement. "The woman was transported to an area hospital, where she was declared deceased."

The shooting led to the roadway's closure for some time.

What's next:

DPS officials said an investigation into the matter is being handled by DPS's Major Incident Division.
