Schumer to introduce No Kings Act in attempt to reverse Supreme Court immunity decision

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer will introduce legislation on Thursday in an attempt to reverse the Supreme Court’s presidential immunity decision in July.
The No Kings Act would attempt to overturn the justices decision by proclaiming that presidents are not immune from criminal law and clarifying that Congress, not the Supreme Court, determines to whom federal criminal law is applied, the Associated Press reported.

This bill, which has over two dozen Democratic cosponsors, was introduced after President Joe Biden pressed legislators to approve a constitutional amendment limiting presidential immunity, and establishing term limits and an ethics code for the Supreme Court’s nine justices.
Schumer tells the AP that Congress has an obligation and the constitutional authority to check the Supreme Court on its decision.

On July 1, the Supreme Court ruled for the first time that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution, a decision that impacts the Justice Department’s case against former President Donald Trump for his efforts to overturn his 2020 presidential election loss.
According to the AP, the Supreme Court’s immunity decision stunned politicians and drew dissent from the court’s liberal justices warning of the threats to democracy, as Trump runs for president again.
