5 killed in plane crash at Mesa's Falcon Field Airport
MESA, Ariz. - Five people were killed after a plane crashed into a car shortly after taking off from Mesa's Falcon Field Airport on Tuesday afternoon.
Flames and smoke billowed from the crash at the airport near Greenfield and McKellips Roads around 4:40 p.m. on Nov. 5. The plane involved was reportedly a six-seater HondaJet HA-420.
"Our community suffered a tragic loss this afternoon. We had a plane that took off from Falon Field Airport in Mesa and upon take off, it crashed into a single vehicle on Greenfield Road," said Mesa Fire and Medical Department's spokesperson Marrisa Ramirez-Ramos.
A pilot, co-pilot and three passengers were on board the plane at the time of the crash. Four of them did not survive. They were identified as:
- Drew Kimball, 44
- Grahm Kimball, 12 (Officials spelled this victim's name as ‘Graham,' but family members say the victim's name is ‘Grahm.’)
- Spencer Lindahl, 43
- Rustin Randall, 48
According to a Mountain View High School Class of 1994 group on social media, Randall graduated from that school. Meanwhile, HOPE Mental Health Foundation posted a tribute to both Drew and Graham. The tribute identified Graham as Drew's son.
"We are grateful to have heard his speech at our gala where 200 guests heard his message about the importance of checking in with our children and loved ones. We will honor his message and legacy at Hope," a portion of the statement reads. "Our prayers are with the Kimball family and all those affected by the tragedy."
A fifth person on the plane survived, and was taken to the hospital for burn injuries. On Nov. 13, Mesa Police identified that person as 18-year-old Kimball Lindahl. Officials also said Lindahl has been released from the hospital.
The driver of the car that was crashed into also died. Authorities are waiting to notify family members before identifying the driver.
The NTSB is investigating the cause of the crash.
Greenfield Road has been reopened in both directions from McKellips to McDowell.
