Phoenix Police officer-involved shooting under investigation

Phoenix Police officials say an investigation is underway following a shooting that involved Phoenix Police officers.

The incident happened in the area of 33rd Street and Taylor. According to police, officers responded to a home in the area for a welfare check, after a caller described running water coming out of the house.

"When officers arrived, they attempted to make contact with any occupants of the house using both the front and back doors. While at the back door, they spoke with an adult male inside of the home who produced a handgun. An exchange of gunfire occurred between the man and one of the officers on scene," read a portion of the statement.

Police officials said officers then retreated, and surrounded the house until members of the department's Tactical Support Bureau arrived on scene.

"The man was later found inside the residence with at least one gunshot wound and was pronounced deceased on scene," read a portion of the statement.

No officers were injured, according to prior statement released by Phoenix Police officials. On Jan. 12, the suspect was identified as 43-year-old John Michael Lewis, Jr.
