Person found dead in Laveen house fire

One person is dead after a fire broke out on Thursday at a home in Laveen.

The fire happened at about 9:15 a.m. on Jan. 9 near 43rd and Southern Avenues.

Phoenix Fire says crews arrived at the scene and found smoke and flames coming from inside the home.

"As firefighters were making an interior attack they found one victim unconscious and not breathing," Capt. Todd Keller said. "Unfortunately the patient was beyond resuscitation."

The victim has not been identified.

Meanwhile, the fire damaged the power pole, and shut off electricity for a short while. Firefighting efforts were also complicated by a lack of fire hydrants nearby, as the location is a County Island. The nearest hydrant was over 1,000 feet away.

"When I got here, it was just it was chaos trying to get into the streets because they had a hose that went blocks and around the corner," said one man, identified only as Michael.

Neighbor speaks out

A woman who lives next door said two brothers lived at the home.

"He was calling his brother to get him out, and my cousin was trying to get in there, but the flames were engulfing the home, so he ran around see if he could go to the other side. The flames where everywhere," said the woman.

The victim was not identified. No firefighters were hurt.

Crews were able to extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading to a nearby home.

Investigators will determine what caused the fire.
