A documentary on actor Paul Reubens, who played the popular character Pee wee Herman in the 1980s, will debut at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.

The documentary titled "Pee-Wee as Himself" explores the life and career of Reubens and his alter ego Pee Wee Herman, Deadline reported

Reubens died at the age of 70 on July 30, 2023, after a six-year struggle with cancer that he kept private, his publicist shared with the Associated Press in a statement.

The two-part documentary is directed by Matt Wolf and Reubens speaks to Wolf about his creative influences and personal struggles he dealt with as an entertainer.

During the filming of the documentary, Reubens didn’t reveal to Wolf that he was battling cancer, Deadline noted, citing a documentary programmer.

Reubens, whose character was known for his white loafers, red bow tie and signature laugh, delighted fans in the film "Pee-wee’s Big Adventure" and on the TV series "Pee-wee’s Playhouse."

In 1985, Reubens took Pee-wee to the big screen with the film "Pee-wee’s Big Adventure," and a sequel followed three years later in the movie "Big Top Pee-wee," in which Pee-wee seeks to join a circus.

Reubens television series, "Pee-wee’s Playhouse," aired for five seasons, and earned 22 Emmys and attracted a huge following of fans of all ages to Saturday-morning television.

The Sundance Film Festival takes place from Jan. 23-Feb. 2, 2025, in Park City, Utah.
