Suspect in stable condition following officer-involved shooting in Mesa

A massive scene continued Friday night near Broadway Road and Mesa Drive, with numerous police cars present since the situation began around 5 p.m.

Video from the scene, shot from various angles earlier on July 11, shows the extensive law enforcement presence.

The incident drew significant local interest, with many neighbors gathering outside their homes and apartments despite the heat, awaiting details on what transpired.

What we know:

Just after 5 p.m., officers responded to a report of shots fired in the area.

According to Detective Richard Giles, when two officers were dispatched to the scene, multiple people told them they saw a man outside an apartment complex, banging on doors, armed with a handgun.

Giles stated, "Both officers observed the man was armed with a handgun and gave him clear, reasonable commands to comply. The man failed to comply with the officers’ commands, leading to an officer-involved shooting that happened at 5:05pm."

The 30-year-old suspect was transported to a hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds and is listed in stable condition.

The handgun was recovered.

"Only one officer discharged his duty weapon during the incident," said Giles. "No officers or other individuals were injured."

The officer involved in the shooting has been with MPD for less than five years.

What we don't know:

The names of the suspect and officer involved have not been released.
