New Orleans truck attack: Body camera video shows gunfire exchange with police

New Orleans Police released this body camera video on Friday showing the exchange of gunfire between the man who drove through a crowd on Bourbon Street on New Year's Day and police officers who responded to the attack.

NEW ORLEANS - The Islamic State group-inspired attacker who killed 14 people in a truck rampage on New Year’s Day in New Orleans shot at police from inside his truck before officers fatally shot him, police bodycam footage released Friday shows.

The footage presented to news outlets by the police department shows Shamsud-Din Jabbar shooting from behind an airbag as several officers surround his truck after it crashed into a crowd of revelers on the city’s famed Bourbon Street shortly after 3 a.m.

Three officers discharged weapons, police officials said at a news conference. Citing the ongoing investigation and pending litigation, they said they would not yet disclose how many shots Jabbar fired.

One of two officers standing next to the open door of Jabbar’s truck has his gun raised, the bodycam of a third approaching officer shows. A muzzle flash is seen from inside the truck and a succession of shots rings out. Several officers run away and dive to the ground as Jabbar fires at them from close range.

The two officers next to the driver’s door both discharged their weapons, police said. A third officer in front of the truck and not visible in the video footage also discharged his weapon.

Jabbar was shot and killed.

Two officers were also shot. They were taken to the hospital for treatment and later released.

What led up to the attack

According to the FBI, Jabbar, who is from Texas, picked up a rented pickup truck in Houston on Dec. 30 and drove to New Orleans on the evening of Dec. 31.

The FBI says Jabbar posted videos declaring his support for ISIS and said he initially considered harming his family and friends.

• October 31, 2024 - Jabbbar recorded himself riding a bike through the French Quarter

• November 10, 2024 - Jabbar was in New Orleans

• December 31, 2024 - At approximately 2:30 p.m., Jabbar entered Louisiana.

• December 31, 2024 - At approximately 9 p.m., Jabbar's rented F-150 is seen in Gonzalez, Louisiana

• December 31, 2024 - At approximately 10 p.m., Jabbar unloads the truck outside of a rental home on Mandeville Street

• January 1, 2025 - At approximately 12:41 a.m., Jabbar parks the truck and walks to Royal Street and Governor Nichols Street in New Orleans

• January 1, 2025 - At approximately 1:53 a.m., Jabbar places first IED (Improvised Explosive Device) at Bourbon Street and Peter Street. Several people move the cooler a block to Orleans Street• January 1, 2025 - At approximately 2:20 a.m., Jabbar places the second IED at Bourbon Street and Toulouse Street

• January 1, 2025 - At approximately 3:15 a.m., Jabbar uses the pickup truck as a lethal weapon before crashing into construction equipment.
