A Mexican drug lord convicted of killing a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent in 1985 has been freed from prison after finishing a 40-year sentence, a federal agent, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, confirmed with the Associated Press.

Who is Ernesto "Don Neto" Fonseca?

The backstory:

Ernesto "Don Neto" Fonseca, who is now 94 years old, was serving the rest of his prison sentence under confinement outside Mexico City since being moved from jail in 2016. Fonseca was released last weekend, according to a federal agent.

Fonseca, the co-founder of Guadalajara Cartel with Rafael Caro Quintero, was arrested in Puerto Vallarta in 1985 and later convicted of the kidnapping, torture, and murder of DEA agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena.

The Associated Press reported that Quintero was also convicted in the murder of Camarena and was one of 29 cartel members Mexico sent to the U.S. in February.
