Mesa retains label as Autism Certified City after three attractions gain Certified Autism Center designations

The Mesa Arts Center, Museum of Natural History and idea Museum have all renewed their Certified Autism Center designations, reaffirming Mesa's designation as an Autism Certified City.

In Nov. 2019, Mesa became the first city in the US to be given the Autism Certified City designation. It has retained that honor for five straight years.

"At the heart of Mesa's Arts and Culture Department is the belief that everyone, regardless of their abilities, deserves access to meaningful cultural experiences, said Illya Riske, acting director of Arts and Culture for the City of Mesa. "Our certification renewal demonstrates our commitment to creating environments where autistic and sensory-sensitive individuals feel valued and fully included in the experiences we offer."

The designations are awarded by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES).

Staff at all three attractions had to complete specific training to accommodate autistic guests and guests with sensitive sensory-motor functions.

"Mesa has consistently led the way in fostering inclusivity and accessibility for millions of autistic individuals and their families," said Myron Pincomb, board chairman for IBCCES. The renewal of the Certified Autism Center designation for these three organizations shows the staff's commitment to providing a welcoming environment for all visitors."

All three of the places are located in downtown Mesa. The Arizona Museum of Natural History, idea Museum and Mesa Arts Center are operated by the Mesa Department of Arts and Culture.

The idea Museum in Mesa has recently reopened after a three-month closure for renovations.
