MCSO: Phoenix man who drowned in Salt River is identified
PHOENIX (AP) - Authorities have identified a Phoenix man who drowned while swimming in the Salt River.
Maricopa County Sheriff's officials say 33-year-old Chandra Chheteri apparently was trying to swim across the river Sunday afternoon when witnesses nearby say he began calling for help.
He only made it to the mid crossing point when he started to panic.
Witnesses say nobody was able to help him and Chheteri quickly disappeared beneath the water.
The MCSO Search and Rescue Dive Team was called to the scene and they recovered Chheteri's body around 5 p.m.
It's still unclear if alcohol or drugs played a factor in the accident.
Sheriff's officials say no signs of trauma were apparent and foul play is not suspected.
Maricopa County Sheriffs Lake Patrol Dive Team has recovered the body of the 32 year old male who drowned at the Salt River.
