MCSO K9 retires; "Hero" headed for life of relaxation

Wednesday was a big day for a deputy sheriff with four legs, as Hero, sometimes known by his nickname, Hugs and Kisses, is officially retired from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office, and will spend the rest of his days relaxing.

"He's trained as a bomb dog, but his number one love is meeting people," said Deputy Brigette McBride, Hero's handler.

"He's just the sweetest dog," said Deputy McBride. "He loves people, but his love for work has declined a little bit."

The five-year-old Belgian Malinois has been with the department since 2014, and has worked everything from home invasions to missing children calls, along with a few big events.

"The NCAA Final Four. He's also worked for the Diamondbacks," said Deputy McBride.

"Anytime we have a major event where there's need for a bomb dog, we'll get called out and we'll help other dogs in the county," said Deputy McBride.

On Wednesday, the County Board of Supervisors voted to transfer ownership of the dog to his handler, Deputy Brigette McBride.

"He's like a family member ,so he'll get to come inside the house now and enjoy being with the rest of the family," said Deputy McBride.

As for what's next...

"Hero's going to take it easy," said Deputy McBride. "He's done working, so he's going to take some time to relax. He loves laying in a hammock, so he's got his own special hammock. He's going to be hanging out and playing ball whenever he wants, and taking time to meet people " said Deputy McBride.
