Man killed during holiday car show and toy drive at Phoenix park
PHOENIX - Dozens of families went from having a good time and helping out at a toy drive to running for their lives when a gunman opened fire at Desert West Park near 67th Avenue and Thomas Road.
The shooting happened around 5:00 p.m. in the parking lot and a 27-year-old man was killed.
Families First Arizona was holding a car show and toy drive at the park. The event has been held at the park for several years, but it was quickly shut down after everything turned to chaos.
"It was in like 10 minutes that we heard some gun shots, I'd say about seven gun shots," said Mario Reiz. "And that's when we heard everybody yelling and running, so we ducked.. tried to get away."
Police spent hours canvassing the area, but at this time, we have not been told if a suspect has been identified.
The victim's name has not been released.
It's not clear if Families First Arizona will reschedule the toy drive.
