Man in custody after pregnant woman shot, killed in north Phoenix

A shooting in north Phoenix has left a pregnant woman dead, as a young girl watched it all take place.

Phoenix police have arrested 36-year-old Dwight A. Miles in connection with the deadly shooting. The victim, 29-year-old Chelsee Dennis, was reportedly seven-months pregnant.

Police say Dennis was rushed to a hospital where she was pronounced dead. Dennis' newborn baby boy was delivered but died at the hospital on April 24.

"There was an argument inside the vehicle, and at one point, the suspect actually pointed the handgun at the victim, and shot the victim," said a Phoenix Police official.

A 5-year-old girl was in the backseat and ran for help.

"A lot of blood," said said one witness, who was on his lunch break at the time of the incident. "A lot of blood."

It was something people can't unsee.

"It was when the girl was out of the car, and the guy had already ran away, and she was just covered in blood," said the witness. "The dog she was holding was just covered in blood."

The witness knew something was wrong.

"Is my mom going to be OK," said the witness, recounting what the little girl said. "My stepdad, my stepdad. She kept saying my stepdad over and over again."

Phoenix police say Miles ran from the car but didn't get very far.

"Officers were in the area were able to actually arrest the suspect," said a Phoenix police official. "The handgun was also recovered nearby."

"If you see something bad happen, try to stop it," said the witness. "I understand you got to do your own thing, stay out of trouble, don't get involved, but still, do a little something to at least try to prevent that from happening."

Police say they've developed probably cause to arrest Miles for homicide and are working to charge him with an additional count of first-degree murder in the death of the newborn baby.
