Gilbert Police surprise a girl after her bike was stolen at a park
GILBERT, Ariz. - A Gilbert family had the police pay a visit to their home this week, but it was far from a typical visit.
It all started after a little girl's beloved bike was stolen.
The family was preparing to add a new bike to their daughter's Christmas list.
Instead, they were the recipients of a very sweet holiday gesture.
Six-year-old Hallie Hayes loves riding her bike, but on a recent outing in her neighborhood with dad, she ended up coming home on two feet instead of two wheels.
"It was like purplish pink, and we were on the golf course, and then I set my bike down, and it got stolen," said Hallie.
"I was shocked, honestly. We don't live in an area that I expected that to happen, just setting it down to walk away for a second," said Jessica Hayes.
Jessica, Hallie's mom, posted on the Next Door app hoping someone would see the bike around the area.
Instead, an officer with Gilbert Police took notice of the theft and when Jessica filed a police report, the department decided to step in.
"They showed up the next day. They called me and they were like 'Can you keep her up late?' and I kept her up," Jessica said.
The next day, they brought her a new bike and they brought her a helmet the following day.
Hallie showed us firsthand her skills on her new bike.
Watch FOX 10 Phoenix live:
"It's kind of pretty, I like it. I like the little sparkles on it," Hallie said.
She also showed us a Gilbert Police badge.
"I'm gonna put it on my backpack," Hallie said about the badge.
She also got a sticker with a police logo to keep on her new bike and scare off thieves.
Jessica says the officers helped save Christmas for Hallie, and she shared this message with the department:
"You guys are awesome, and I know your job is to protect and serve, but you went way far above and beyond," she said.
