Man falls, dies while hiking Lookout Mountain in Phoenix

A man is dead after falling at a hiking trail at Lookout Mountain Park near 16th Street and Waltann Lane on Wednesday.

Authorities say fire and police responded to the incident around 3 p.m. after a man in his early 70s fell to his death.

"I know there's some neat areas. People have their favorite places to go. Even for an experienced hiker, those trails are there for a reason. And unless you have the gear, which he didn't, you just can't do it," said Phoenix Fire Dept. Captain Rob McDade.

Emergency crews had to retrieve the man's body, which was found in steep, rugged terrain.

Per Phoenix Police, identification of the victim will likely be after proper next-of-kin notifications have been made.

The incident remains under investigation.
