Was Instagram down? Users reported outage issues on Thursday

Instagram appeared to be down for some users on Thursday.

Downdetector.com, a website where users can report outages, showed thousands of reports of outages Thursday afternoon.

Is Instagram down?

What we know:

According to downdetector.com, there was a spike of nearly 12,000 outage reports around 7:30 p.m. ET time. By 7:45 p.m. ET, more than 31,000 social media users reported issues.

According to the website, 72% of respondents said they had issues with the app, following 24% who said they had an issue with the server connection.

Other sites owned by Meta, including Facebook, had about 550 reports of outages on Thursday afternoon.

By 9 p.m. ET, the outage number declined drastically, with only about 400 people reporting issues.

What we don't know:

It’s unclear how big the outage is, how many users are affected across the platforms, and what caused the outage.
