An Indiana suspect is accused of brandishing an object that appeared to be a sword at a police officer and stealing a police cruiser before escaping authorities.

High-speed chase ends in crash in another state

Dig deeper:

Police officers attempted a traffic stop in Chandler, Indiana when Nina Devillez allegedly pulled out a sword on cops, leading one of the officers to fire multiple gunshots. Devillez was struck by one of the shots at least once, WLWT5-TV in Cincinnati reported.

Despite being hit, Devillez was able to steal a police cruiser and lead the officers on a high-speed chase that covered more than 30 miles and crossed state lines.

Authorities told WFIE-TV in Indiana that the chase continued until Devillez crashed the stolen police cruiser into a field in Daviess County, Kentucky.

Devillez was arrested on April 21 and was taken to the hospital for a gunshot wound.

Citing court records, WFIE reported Devillez is facing charges that include Battery with Bodily Injury to Public Safety Officer, Theft, Auto Theft, Criminal Recklessness with Deadly Weapon and Resisting Law Enforcement.

The Evansville Courier Press noted that Indiana court records list Devillez as a "female," but her Kentucky jail booking records list her as a "male."

Suspect was already facing charges before the incident

Local perspective:

Court records indicate Devillez was facing an attempted murder case in Lawrence County, Indiana, and was out on bond at the time of the incident.
