Tuesday morning, firefighters from the City of Fayetteville honored the lives lost in the September 11th terror attacks in 2001.

Fayetteville firefighters challenged themselves to a one-mile hike to the top of Stone Mountain, which is climb-equivalent to 160 flights of stairs. The first responders did the climb wearing full fighting gear on Tuesday, the 17th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

A total of 343 firefighters and paramedics lost their lives on 9/11. Many more have since died of 9/11 related illnesses.

This year's climb took roughly two hours to complete. Firefighters from a number of departments participated in the commemorative hike.
