West Valley family OK after car crashes into home

A family in the West Valley is lucky to be OK, after an SUV slams into the home. The crash happened after a failed traffic stop during the overnight hours, and neighbors say the roadway is getting more dangerous. FOX 10's Brian Webb has more.

A man is in custody after police say he crashed into several vehicles and a house in west Phoenix.

The incident happened just after 2 a.m. on Nov. 22 near 59th Avenue and McDowell Road. Phoenix Police say they tried to pull over an SUV that was speeding. The driver didn't stop, and sped off into a nearby neighborhood before losing control and crashing into several other cars and a home. A home camera in the area captured the moment the SUV sped by, just before it slammed into the house.

The crash left behind some damages, with the home's front pillars popped out of place, as well as cracks in the walls, windows, and the front door.

"We heard a loud noise," said one neighbor named ‘Oscar,’ who asked us to hide his face for the interview. "I thought they had gotten into my house."

The driver was taken into custody and hospitalized as a precaution. He has since been released from the hospital and will be booked into jail. The suspect was not identified.

No one inside the home was hurt. The family who lives at the home, along with their friends, were seen gathering around after the incident and comforting each other. They didn't go inside because the house shows signs of not being stable.

Impairment is a factor in the crash, police said. Meanwhile, neighbors say the street is always full of speeding drivers, and is getting more dangerous by the day. In fact, a home located about half a block away from the scene was hit by another vehicle, and the front is still boarded up.

Meanwhile, there is a memorial about a block away from the scene that was set up for a driver who was killed in a collision.

"Even though we have the police station down the street, you know they're still going on the speed limit, so we need speed bumps, definitely," said Oscar.
