Parents were urged to stop using – and destroy – a certain children’s foldable play yard sold on Amazon due to a suffocation risk to infants.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said in a notice dated March 20 that the play yards were sold on both the brand’s website and on Amazon as recently as last spring.

Here’s what to know:

Play yards pose suffocation risk, CPSC says

Why you should care:

The CPSC notice states that the play yards "pose a risk of serious injury or death from suffocation to infants." The agency added that the product violates multiple provisions of the federal safety regulation for play yards, including mattress displacement, and that they are missing required warnings and labels.

What we know:

The CPSC said the issue involves Welspo-branded play yards, which are foldable and measure about 39 inches wide by 39 inches long by 30 inches high. They have mesh panels with red, blue, yellow and teal borders, and each panel features an animal motif with a lion, monkey, elephant and sun. The lion mesh panel is a zippered door.

The play yards include a mattress with the same animal motifs and carrying bag, according to the CPSC notice. Welspo is printed on the side of the play yards and on the packaging.

Model BP8305D and Baby Playpen are also printed on the packaging.

Dig deeper:

The foldable play yards were sold online on Welspo.com and on Amazon between December 2023 and March 2024 for about $90. They were manufactured in China.

What they're saying:

"Bestrich, of Hong Kong, the retailer of this product and owner of the Welspo brand, has not agreed to offer an acceptable remedy to consumers," the CPSC notice states.

"CPSC urges consumers to stop using and destroy all Welspo-branded play yards immediately. To destroy the product, first disassemble the fabric cover from the frame," it adds. "Cut up the play yard cover and mattress pad, and then dispose of the pieces in the trash or recycling."
