Car repair shops team up to help single mom
GLENDALE, Ariz. - A single mother received the surprise of her life. Emily Shy's vehicle needed $6,500 of work, but money is tight. In addition to having a 3-year-old daughter who's looking forward to Christmas, Emily also attends college classes.
This is one of those stories that makes you feel good as the holidays approach -- people working together to help someone who is doing her best to build a better life.
Shy is raising a 3-year-old daughter by herself and studying accounting, with no family around to help.
"It has been really tough just trying to go to school.. provide for my kid," she said.
When her 2002 Chevrolet Blazer broke down, Shy was stranded. But then neighborhood auto repair professionals NARPRO stepped in.
"We had to put in new differential, manifold gasket, catalytic converters.. a $7,500 repair," said Howard Fleischman of Community Tire Pros and Auto Repair.
NAPA donated parts and Helping Hands for Single Moms pitched in too.
"Back in 2007, we first started with NARPRO. They have provided $230,000 in repairs. We partner in parts. They are labor and hundreds of moms have been helped, thanks to NARPRO to stay in college and on the road and in school," said Chris Coffman of Helping Hands for Single Moms.
A network of good deed-doers across the valley.
"NARPRO has been helping in cahoots with Helping Hands for 10 years. Our shop, Good Works Auto Repair, also very much involved. We have a car we will donated to a single mom," said Glen Hayward.
Not only did a team of three mechanics fix Shy's car, she got some gifts for the Christmas season that are sure to be a hit with her daughter.
"I am so thankful. I did not expect so much. It is so much. I am overwhelmed," said Shy. "It really gives me hope. There is so much faith in humanity. People can be so kind and generous."
