An Indianapolis man who went outside to grab an Amazon package found two baby girls in a ditch in freezing temperatures after they’d been kidnapped earlier that day in a stolen vehicle.

According to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers responded around 11 a.m. Monday to a report of a stolen vehicle on the city’s south side. The woman whose car was stolen told police there were two babies – a 4-month-old and a 5-month-old – inside the Hyundai Sonata when it was stolen. The babies had been left in the car with the engine running, police said.

Not long after the initial call was made, an officer found the stolen vehicle while police were deploying drones and working to obtain an AMBER Alert for the missing babies. Police then got a call from a good Samaritan who said he found two babies in a ditch still in their carseats.

The temperature that morning was 27 degrees, according to The Indianapolis Star.

The man who found the babies took them inside his house until police arrived. The babies were checked out by medics and reunited with their family.

"If you see something, like a baby in a ditch, say something (and) do something," Robert Deane, the man who found the baby girls, told The Star.

Police said Friday that a suspect has not yet been identified.

"He did what any good person would do," IMPD Officer William Young said. "Who knows what could have happened if this particular individual was not able to come outside."
