20 new flamingos join the Sunken Gardens family

A flock of flamingos has found a new home in the Bay Area. Sunken Gardens, a historic botanical attraction in St. Petersburg, welcomed 20 young Chilean flamingos Wednesday after years of fundraising efforts.

The St. Pete landmark says they launched the initiative more than three years ago, and after getting funding from the city for a new nighttime enclosure late last year, they were finally able to seal the deal and adopt the flock.

"It has been quite the journey to get our new flamingos, and we couldn't have done it without the commitment and enthusiasm of the community," said gardens supervisor Bill O'Grady.

Grady traveled to meet the birds prior to their journey to St. Petersburg, and has said he will monitor them closely the first few weeks in their new home.

They will be joining the park's current resident flamingos, George and Lucy, who once shared their home at Sunken Gardens with 15 other feathered friends.

A celebration in honor of the newcomers will take place at Sunken Gardens on Sunday, May 1, from noon to 4 p.m.
