Scottsdale PD: Tempe Fire Captain shot, killed near Old Town; suspect arrested

Scottsdale Police confirm that off-duty Tempe Fire Captain, 34-year-old Kyle Brayer, died after he was shot in the head in Scottsdale over the weekend.

At 2:30 a.m. early Saturday morning, Brayer was riding on the back of a golf cart with other people heading south on Civic Center Plaza and approaching Stetson.

The suspect, identified as 21-year-old Hezron Parks, was in a red Scion coupe and began driving closely, even bumping the rear end of the golf cart. Brayer got out of the cart and went up to the driver's side window and was shot in the head.

Police say Parks sped away from the scene eastbound on Stetson toward Boondocks Patio & Grill, and then south on 75th Street, hitting other cars along the way.

Medics rushed Brayer to the hospital where he he died, says Scottsdale Police spokesperson Sgt. Ben Hoster.

Scottsdale police say Parks is being held on a charge of second-degree murder. Parks reportedly turned himself into Scottsdale Police, shortly after noon on Sunday. According to court documents, Parks was refused entrance at another club, and lost his cellphone at a third. Parks also claimed he felt threatened when Brayer approached him, and felt justified using his pistol to kill Brayer.
