Scottsdale-based recovery center offers new tool for people to battle their addictions

PHOENIX (FOX 10) -- Fighting addiction can be a painful experience, both physically and mentally, but a Scottsdale-based addiction center has found a new, unique tool to help their clients in the difficult process.

"I started surrounding myself with people that were into a bunch of drugs," said Hunter Hurt, who is undergoing treatment at the Scottsdale Recovery Center.

Hurt started to realize he needed help.

"I started smoking weed," said Hurt. "From there, I started doing ecstasy, Xanax, cocaine. In school, I was missing class because I just didn't' care about anything, and I got to the point where I was like it doesn't really matter if I die."

Hurt asked his parents for help. He moved from Iowa, and began receiving treatment at the Scottsdale Recovery Center. As part of his treatment, staff members at the center introduced Hunt to the Genesis Life Float Pod.

"It's very relaxing. It kind of gets you into yourself and puts you in a deep state of relaxation," said Amy Samuel, a Recovery Coach at the Scottsdale Recovery Center.

Samuel said the benefits of the float pod are two-fold. The high density of salt means a person can completely relax while floating in the water. The salt also pulls out toxins. Above all, the float pod helps people meditate, and be alone with their thoughts.

"It's really all-encompassing," said Samuel. "Mind, body, and spirit."

"For so long with my anxiety and my ADHD, my thoughts were just racing all over the place," said Hurt. "It gave me a place to just sit and be alone with my thoughts, and really process them and really get through everything without any external distractions."

Hurt admits he was skeptical at first, but said he's found it beneficial in his road to sobriety.

"It felt like it helped me figure things out about myself," said Hurt.

The float pod is available to any clients. They can sign up and float for anywhere up to 45 minutes per session.
