Heavy rain, dust storm pounds the Valley, leaving damages in its wake

PHOENIX (KSAZ/AP) - Heavy rain and wind battered parts of the Valley on Monday, as 2018's monsoon season continued in Arizona.

This comes just a day after the West Valley community of Buckeye was battered by a monsoon storm that left behind major damage. That storm knocked out power lines in Buckeye, affecting about 21,000 residents who get their electricity from APS. Power was restored to almost all of them by Monday before the second storm.

Authorities still are trying to determine the damage total from the storm in Buckeye, which is west of Phoenix.

Officials at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport say some flights were being delayed until the storm passed.

SRP officials reported Monday evening that about 66,000 customers were without power. On Tuesday morning, about 8,000 customers were still without power, with the majority of these outages in the East Valley.

Meanwhile, APS officials reported that as of Tuesday morning, 2,165 customers were still without power in the Valley.

The storm has also caused more damage in the Phoenix area. Near downtown Phoenix, a roof was blown off of a motel, causing some major damage. FOX 10's Matt Rodewald has learned that one person was seriously hurt, and 20 others were displaced.

Meanwhile, ADOT officials say water covered the roadway at one point on southbound I-17, at Buckeye.

Mesa Fire officials also rescued a woman from a home near 6th and Center Streets, after a tree fell on the house.

"The tree fell right on her, but she's fine," said a witness, identified only as "Abra".
