19-year-old accused of causing deadly crash while driving under the influence has history of DUI
AVONDALE, Ariz. (FOX 10) -- A weekend crash turns deadly, and according to police, it was a drunk driver that caused the accident.
The driver is just 19 years old, and was convicted of driving drunk just one month before the crash. On Wednesday, candles, balloons and flowers form a growing memorial at the intersection of Lower Buckeye Road and Avondale Boulevard, where the accident took place.
It was a serious crash, and according to the documents, the teen's 3rd DUI offense. The judge openly stated that she had some serious concerns about the teenager.
On Wednesday, the teen, Gabino Matancillas, faced a judge while holding himself up with a walker. He is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol and marijiana, killing his female passenger and seriously hurting himself and two others. The teen's license was reportedly suspended, and prosecutors emphasized that the incident, which took place days after Christmas, wasn't his first DUI-related offense.
Matancillas admitted that he and his passengers were smoking in the car. At the scene of the accident, investigators found multiple 12 packs of beers and other alcoholic beverages.
Matancillas is being charged with manslaughter, aggravated assault, endangerment and DUI. A $100,000 bond has been set.
