Garbage truck gets stuck in sinkhole in Torrence neighborhood
TORRANCE, Calif. - A sinkhole opened up in a Torrance neighborhood Thursday afternoon that partially swallowed a garbage truck.
The Torrance Fire Department says the driver had just finished picking up a load shortly after 2 p.m. at nearby Riviera Elementary School located at 365 Paseo de Arena and was backing out of a driveway when the street collapsed.
Fire officials say the sinkhole may be a result of a storm drain issue and not a broken water main. The hole is 5-feet deep and about 20-feet by 10-feet.
All lanes of Via Del Callado and Paseo de Arena in and around the sinkhole are closed to traffic. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes.
No injuries have been reported. The investigation is ongoing.
