Mom and son team compete in indoor skydiving competitions

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - A valley mom and her son celebrated Mother's Day in a very adventurous way with indoor skydiving.

The sport of indoor skydiving bonded Mary and Nick Traub in a way they never thought possible.

"We were the only parent child team there and the only mother son," said Mary.

The Traubs took their mother-son relationship to new heights when they recently competed together in the iFly National Competition in Virginia Beach.

After enrolling her 13-year-old in the local iFly Flight School Program, the life-long skydiving enthusiast decided she wasn't going to be left out.

"My son was coming here to flight school once a week in the kids club and I would come and watch him fly every week, and I was honestly a little jealous and so I wanted to fly with him," Mary said.

They started flying together and then training to compete.

"Yeah, it's awesome. It's a great bonding experience. You're in t here because a lot of times a parent and child can't really compete in the same sport on the same team because of different physical abilities," Nick said.

Mom is an experienced skydiver with more than 300 jumps under her belt. She's proud her son is following in her footsteps, but more than that appreciates the bond the sport has provided.

"And just, there's no body else I would rather fly with," Mary said.

Mary and Nick plan to compete together again in indoor skydiving competitions.
