Woman, dog killed in apartment fire
A woman and a dog are dead after a fire broke out at an apartment complex overnight Sunday. FOX 10's Carmen Blackwell reports.
GLENDALE, Ariz. - A woman and a dog are dead after a fire broke out at an apartment complex in Glendale overnight.
Glendale Fire says they were called out to the Connect on Northern apartment complex near 51st and Northern Avenues around 2:30 a.m. Monday for reports of a fire. The call came from the residents in the second-story unit saying a fire had started in the patio area of the unit below them.
Fire officials say there were four people and two dogs inside to second-story apartment. Three people and one dog made it out safely, but a woman and the other dog were killed in the fire. A man was taken to the Arizona Burn Center - Valleywise with severe burns where he is in critical condition.
"It looks like the apartment was flame-broiled, it went up quick and it's gone," said Jane Short, who lives across the street.
Fire crews say the fire started on the back patio of the first-floor unit and quickly spread upstairs.
"We start on top where fire arises so we went immediately to the second floor where there was extra fire, made a quick entrance and found her," said Chris James with Glendale Fire.
The Red Cross is now assisting 13 residents who have been displaced.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
