Woman dies following officer-involved-shooting

A woman died after being shot during an officer-involved-shooting on Sunday night.

Phoenix police tell Fox 10 that the shooting happened at an apartment complex near 2200 W. Heatherbrae Drive just after 8 p.m.

Officers responded to several 9-1-1 calls about 36-year-old Sherrisa Homer firing a gun at a nearby canal, including a call from the suspect, who said she had shot several people behind the apartment complex. She was not cooperative with the 9-1-1 operator and hung up the phone.

When police arrived at the scene, Homer was inside an apartment and armed with a handgun. Officers attempted to establish contact with the suspect, who then pointed the gun at herself and at two officers.

Immediately, one of the officers, an 8-year-veteran, shot the suspect, who was then transported to a local hospital where she later died.

No officers were injured in the shooting and per police protocol, the officer who fired the fatal shot has been placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation.
