Woman, child dead following Mesa home fire

An adult woman and a small child is dead, following a fire at an apartment Tuesday afternoon.

According to Nik Rasheta with Mesa police, police and fire units responded to the 500 block of Country Club at about 4:03 p.m., for a call of smoke in a residence.

When crews made their way inside, they determine the source of the smoke was a nearly extinguished fire inside one of the bedrooms, and the deceased people were found inside the bedroom.

From the outside of the apartment, it's hard to tell that a fire has taken place, and investigators are facing many perplexing questions, such as whether the fire led to the deaths of the adult woman and the little boy, how did the fire start, and why they were not able to get out in time.

Mesa Police and Fire investigators have joined forces, as they search for answers. Mesa Police said a family lived here, and that a member of the family returned home on Tuesday afternoon, to a smoky apartment.

On Thursday, FOX 10 Phoenix has learned that the woman found dead inside the apartment was an employee with the Arizona Department of Economic Security named Jazmin Bridges. The boy's identity has yet to be released.
