PHOENIX (FOX 10) -- Christmas came a little early for one Valley veteran. The veteran gives back to other veterans, and now his community is paying it forward to him with a car.
The gift was made possible by the City of Mesa Chamber of Commerce. Currently, Adam Jackson's car keeps breaking down, and he doesn't have the resources to fix it. With the gift, he doesn't have to worry about that anymore.
Jackson says this couldn't have come at a better time.
"We've been having some struggles with our vehicle right now," said Jackson. "This couldn't have come at a better time. My girlfriend is on her final semester at ASU, and she's been taking the train every single day, and I've been trying to get to work on a car that won't start in the mornings."
For nearly two years, Jackson has worked as an art teacher at the nonprofit Oakwood Creative Care. Some of his students there are also veterans.
"People with dementia and different forms of dementia and other cognitive issues, and we try to activate their brain and get them out of staring at the TV," said Jackson.
In three years, the group has been able to donate five vehicles to other veterans in need. Friday's car was the sixth.
"We have a large veteran population in Mesa, and when you have a veteran like this that is really in need of a vehicle like this, it's just really special to be able to give back," said City Council member Kevin Thompson.
The car gifted Thursday came from a couple who donated it. The other five were donated by a gentleman by the name of Richard Thompson with Valley Express Towing.
