Firefighters say a 21-month-old boy was unconscious when he was pulled from a backyard swimming pool in Glendale.

According to the Glendale Fire Department, the boy was found in the swimming pool at a home near 65th Avenue and Mountain View Boulevard.

Firefighters say the boy has been taken to a hospital and his condition has improved.

Rescue crews at the home say there is a fence around the swimming pool, but no gate. Firefighters are unsure how long the boy was under water before being found.

Meanwhile, people in the pool fence business say pool fences need a gate.

"It kind of defeats the purpose of the fence," said Gene Sena with Capitol Fence Builders & Supply. "Gotta keep your pools buttoned up from the inside. If you have kids, you got to be five foot tall."

There are many different technologies for self-closing gates, but one of the best locks on those gates involves a magnet. The magnet lock locks with a key, and little fingers can't open it. It's good to have for families with pools and kids.

"It would give them a huge peace of mind," said Maradith Yonko with DCS Pool Barriers.
