Officer shot, suspect dead in botched drug deal

A botched drug deal in Tempe led to a gun fire exchange between an officer and a suspect that left the suspect dead and the officer in the hospital.

A suspect is dead in an officer-involved shooting, Tempe Police said in a post on X on Friday night.

The shooting took place near the intersection of Rural and Baseline roads.

The suspect shot one officer in the leg before police were able to fatally shoot the suspect. 

The officer has non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a hospital.

Shooting involving Tempe Police leaves 1 suspect dead

Dozens of police cars cordoned off the area near Baseline and Rural roads for an officer-involved shooting that left one person dead. FOX 10's Nicole Krasean has more details.

During a press conference, an officer said that the incident stemmed from a drug deal gone bad. 

The suspect was pulled over on Lamplighter Lane and fled from his vehicle on foot before the shooting. 

The area was cordoned off beginning around 7:00 p.m.
