PHOENIX - A normal day turned into deadly chaos after a shooting took place at a CVS pharmacy parking lot near 44th Street and McDowell Road. The victim, 31-year-old Ryan Duran Moss, a local taxi cab driver.
In court documents detailing the events from last week, Moss was sitting in his car in the CVS parking lot when another vehicle with Nathaniel Garcia as a passenger pulled up next to him. Witnesses say Garcia got out of the car and began shooting at Moss, who was able to return fire, according to police.
Moss even made it out of the car to run across the street towards a Chevron gas station. He was well known there.
"He came in pretty much every day," said Justin Shaw, a clerk.
And he came in that day too, but in a condition no one had ever seen him in. Surveillance video from the gas station shows Moss after he was shot. Walking into the gas station, he appears to be fine, but as he gets to the register, he leaned on the counter -- and clerks say he was begging for help.
Shaw was there, but he hadn't noticed Moss was in the store. He was outside calling 911.
"And the next thing I know, they're like, hey, this guy's been shot. I turn around, he was lying on the ground."
Shaw recognized Moss immediately.
"It was very sad," he said.
Police say Garcia was hit during the exchange and was released from an area hospital. Detectives say Garcia told them he drank so much that he blacked out and does not remember anything.
Garcia was charged with one count of second degree murder and one count prohibited possessor.
