Surgeons hold pumpkin carving contest at St Joe's

PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Some surgeons at St. Joseph's Hospital used their hands Wednesday, not for surgery, but to carve a pumpkin. The annual competition is also a reminder to carve pumpkins safely. It's the annual Doc O'Lantern Pumpkin Carving Contest.

"Our doctors and all of our staff work really hard all year, and we need to have fun, so this is a great event," said Patty White.

Dr. Ross Bremner is a two-time champion, and he brought tough competition with spray paint, blowdryers, and razors.

"I've got teenage daughters, they've got lots of ideas," said Dr. Bremner.

So did Dr. Jasmine Huang.

"This is a pumpkin going for a doctor's visit, so he's not thrilled with his appointment, he's getting his flu shot which is very important," said Dr. Huang.

But the winner this time was a momma pumpkin, created by 4th-year medical student Patrick Eiben.

"I was actually tossing the idea around to a lot of docs, and I was talking to one of the anesthesiologists yesterday, and she said you have to do it, it's got to be done," said Eiben.

It took him a little over an hour to prepare for the contest.

"I looked online, and I found some ideas, and I figured I would just grab the carrots because they you know are orange, and I figured it would match," said Eiben.

As for the big trophy, it's going home with him right after his name is engraved on it.

Aside from the fun, doctors also stressed to be careful while carving; to always point the tool away from you and cut smarter, not sharper.

If you would like to see the pumpkins, they are on display at the hospital for the next week.
