Madison No. 1 Middle School under quarantine

School district officials say students and staff at the school have been exposed to those who have COVID-19.

Officials with a school district in Phoenix say some of their staff members and students will have to quarantine for at least 14 days due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement, officials with the Madison School District say the 14-day quarantine period for students and staff members at Madison No. 1 Middle School will start on Oct. 26.

"The planned return date for students and staff is Monday, November 9 unless the Maricopa County Department of Public Health recommends extending the quarantine period up to 28 days," read a portion of the statement.

School district officials say a fourth positive case of COVID-19 on campus prompted the quarantine, and all students will continue to learn at home, via online means.

Parents react

Parents of students affected were notified by the school, which sent a letter out on Oct. 23.

"We kind of expected it to happen," said parent Michelle Udvare. "We wanted to let the children go to schools so they could have a social experience and a more normal experience, but we were kind of expecting to be home again."

Jessica Goodman says while she will miss the social aspect of in-person learning for her kids, she believes the school has done a good job with virtual learning already.

"I think socially it’s great for the kids to be together, hang out together and have that component, but we’ll make sure," said Goodman.

COVID-19 symptoms

Symptoms for coronavirus COVID-19 include fever, coughing, and shortness of breath. These, of course, are similar to the common cold and flu.

Expect a common cold to start out with a sore or scratchy throat, cough, runny and/or stuffy nose. Flu symptoms are more intense and usually come on suddenly, and can include a high fever.

Symptoms of COVID-19 may appear more slowly. They usually include fever, a dry cough and noticeable shortness of breath, according to the World Health Organization. A minority of cases develop pneumonia, and the disease is especially worrisome for the elderly and those with other medical problems such as high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes or heart conditions.
