PHOENIX (FOX 10) -- Following fallen Phoenix Police officer Paul Rutherford's memorial service at the Christ's Church of the Valley in Peoria, a procession took the officer's body to his final resting place.
Phoenix police say Rutherford died last week when he was struck by a passing vehicle in west Phoenix. The driver of the vehicle was a 40-year-old woman who stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. Police say officers determined she was not impaired.
People lined the streets all over the Valley Thursday afternoon to pay their respects to Rutherford. At the 15th Avenue/Loop 101 overpass, Terri and her sister Shelly hung a sign and flags.
"It's sad, but it's what I want to do," said Terri.
They and the rest of their family sat in silence, as the procession slowly passed.
"To pay respects to Officer Rutherford and his family and the police department," said Shelly. "I have a friend who lost his father as a fallen officer, so to me, it's very personal."
"He deserves our respect. He seemed like a really kind man. I saw him and I was like, I know him from somewhere, but no. You see him and it just took my heart away and I knew I needed to do this," said Terri.
When there's this type of procession, both say they've made it a point to come out and pay their respects. They say today, it was the least they could do for a man who was known as an amazing husband, father, grandfather, police officer and an all around great guy.
"This isn't our first, and it won't be our last either," said Shelly.
