PHOENIX (KSAZ) - Police have identified a suspect that was killed during an officer-involved shooting in Phoenix.
Phoenix police say the shooting happened near 20th Street and Thomas early Friday morning. On Saturday, police released the name of the suspect, 22-year-old Jorge Ceniceros, who was killed on the scene.
Investigators say the suspect came out of the bushes at the edge of a park, approached the officer, and attacked him and then tried to steal his gun. The officer's nose was broken during the scuffle.
The officer was able to call for backup and when a detective arrived at the scene, the suspect and officer were struggling over a weapon. Both the detective and officer fired their weapons, shooting the suspect. He collapsed to the ground after running a short distance, police say.
The injured officer was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of the broken nose.
It's unknown if the suspect was carrying his own weapon. Both the officer and the detective have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation.
