Man dies after being shot by Phoenix officers
It was later discovered that he had been holding a water gun.
PHOENIX - Phoenix police are investigating after a man was fatally shot by officers near Interstate 17 and Northern Avenue on July 8.
At around 9 p.m. on Thursday, officials say a 64-year-old man had called 911 several times, "making various statements which indicated a mental health problem."
When officers arrived, they spoke with the man through the door and offered help, officials said in a statement.
"A short time later the male opened the door and announced he had a gun," police said.
He then stepped outside and pointed what appeared to be a handgun to officers.
A police sergeant and three other officers fired in response, striking the man. He was taken to the hospital and later died from his injuries.
Officers later discovered that the man had been carrying a water gun.
No other people were hurt.
The investigation is ongoing.
