2 dead following crash along Grand Avenue in west Phoenix

Two people were killed in a crash on Grand Avenue in Phoenix on Tuesday morning.

Police said the crash involving a semi-truck happened at around 7 a.m. near of 33rd and Grand avenues on Dec. 10.

Officers on scene said two people died as a result of the crash. They are Aaron Soto and Angel Loera – both were 28.

"Investigators learned 28-year-old Aaron Soto was driving northwest on Grand Avenue with 28-year-old Angel Loera riding as passenger. Witnesses observed the car driving at a high rate of speed when it struck the back of a semi-truck who was making a left into 33rd Avenue from southeast Grand Avenue. The driver of the semi-truck was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and showed no signs of impairment," Phoenix Police said.

‘Keep us in your prayers’

"He was just full of life. He was a great father of two," said Samantha Cuevas, Angel's aunt.

She says her family is shattered after learning her nephew was killed. Now, she’s holding on to her last memory with him.

"This Thanksgiving, we had it with him, and that was the last time I saw him. He was just playing, joking with us, and just laughing with us, and it’s just going to be hard without him," Cuevas said.

She says Angel loved his family and loved making others laugh.

"He was very smart, very handsome, very goofy," Cuevas said. "He would laugh about everything. He would just joke with us about everything."

Robert Romero, who lives in the neighborhood, said his heart sank when he saw the crime scene tape.

"It just breaks my heart to see this happen, especially at this time of year, when people are out shopping, visiting family, and something like this happens. It’s really sad," Romero said.

As the family prepares to head into their first holiday without Angel, they have a message for the community.

"Just keep us in your prayers," Cuevas said. "We are really going to need it. This really hit close to home. We don’t even know where to start or what to think, but just pray for us because we are really going to need it."
