Phoenix breaks record high temperature for Monday

PHOENIX (AP/KSAZ) - Phoenix is dealing with record high temperatures on Monday, as an excessive heat warning is in effect until July 25.

According to a tweet made to the National Weather Service Phoenix's verified Twitter page Monday afternoon, Sky Harbor reached 115°F (46.11°C), breaking the old record of 114°F (45.55°C) set back in 2014.

National Weather Service meteorologists say highs could reach 117°F (~47.22°C) on Tuesday. They say overnight lows could stay in the 90s all three days.

Meanwhile, the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality extended an ozone high pollution advisory for the greater Phoenix area through Monday.

It means weather conditions combined with existing ozone levels are expected to result in local maximum eight-hour ozone concentrations that pose a health risk.

ADEQ officials say adverse health effects increase as air quality deteriorates.

Ozone is an air contaminant which can cause breathing difficulties for children as well as persons with respiratory problems.
