Peoria Police investigate fatal officer-involved shooting near Walmart

PEORIA, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Police confirm they are investigating a fatal officer involved shooting in the area of 79th and West Peoria Avenue.

Investigators say around 6:00 p.m. Monday they received a call about a male who had shoplifted a bottle of milk and was standing outside of the Walmart store's garden center. Officers confronted the a 20-year-old man as he was leaving the store and gunfire was exchanged.

Officials say two officers were involved, but they weren't injured. The suspect, identified as Michael Stout, was transported to an area hospital. He died from his injuries on Tuesday morning.

"Detectives on scene recovered the handgun used by the suspect, which turned out to be a stolen gun from a vehicle burglary in Peoria, earlier in the morning. Both officers involved in this incident were wearing and had activated their body worn cameras," stated Peoria Police Officer Brandon Sheffert.

The area was restricted during the investigation.
