Pearl Harbor Day memorial events held at Arizona State Capitol
PHOENIX (AP) - Veterans groups, citizens and Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey gathered at the state Capitol to commemorate the 77th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.
The Arizona Department of Veterans' Services hosted the state's Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday at the Wesley Bolin memorial plaza just east of the state Capitol.
The event began Friday at 10:15 a.m. and the official program kicked off at 10:55 a.m. Arizona time. That's the moment local time when planes from a group of Japanese aircraft carriers launched their attack on the Pearl Harbor naval base and nearby military facilities, killing 1,177 Americans. Nearly half the dead were aboard the battleship USS Arizona, which was sunk.
The program included a flyover by a B-17 bomber and a C-47 transport.
Ducey has ordered all state flags to be flown at half-staff for the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
