PHOENIX (KSAZ) - In an emergency situation, every detail is important. When training to respond to one, the lessons learned could be the difference between life and death.
"The basic CERT program is intended to train people how to take care of their home and neighborhood in the event of a disaster," said CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) leader David Weed.
Tens of thousands are trained nationwide to prepare for potential emergencies. About 200 people here in Phoenix become members of the CERT team like volunteer Debbie McKnight.
"It was very hands on," said McKnight. "They gave good instruction, you know, it's very beginner friendly."
CERT members respond to a variety of situations: floods, fires, search and rescues, and more. Training sessions take place quarterly.
