Mesa man drowns in lake while trying to retrieve basketball, police say

A man died after he went into a community lake in Mesa to retrieve a basketball and never came back up from the water Saturday afternoon.

Bradley Perry, 54, was a homeless man who often frequented Dobson Ranch Park, police said. He had been watching people play basketball from a ramada when he saw it go into the lake.

Witnesses reported seeing him go into the water to get the ball and saw him struggle to return to the water's edge. At some point, he went under the surface and never came back out.

First responders searched for Perry in the water next to Dobson Ranch Library near Dobson and Guadalupe roads.

"The male was recovered in water 8 feet deep and over 80 feet from the location he entered the water," police said.

Over in Phoenix, a toddler died after being found in a hotel pool, and in Avondale, a man was pulled from his backyard pool after police say he drowned.
