PHOENIX (KSAZ) - An honor guard has been on scene next to a makeshift memorial outside of the A.L. Moore-Grisham Mortuary in Uptown Phoenix as people come by to pay their respects to late Senator John McCain.
"Nothing in life is more liberating than to fight for a cause larger than yourself, something that encompasses you but is not defined by your existence alone." - Words from Senator John McCain's 1999 best selling book "Faith of My Fathers: A Family Memoir"
At the time of his death, Senator McCain had served the United States of America for six decades.
Since moving to Phoenix in 1981 to begin his political career, Arizona has been apart of John McCain.
After serving several years in Congress, the U.S. Senate and leading two presidential campaigns, the decorated war hero will be apart of Arizona forever.
"Well I felt moved because John McCain is an honorable man," said one visitor. "I never was in the service but I appreciate the things that he did for this country and he was a straight up guy so I just stopped by today to see where his resting body was."
People stopped by the Phoenix funeral home where his body is resting to honor the late senator.
"I figured I'd come out here today to let him know he's thought about and he's well respected here in Arizona," said Dan Rivera.
Dan Rivera says he's spent 20 years in the military and always looked up to Senator McCain, adding that even though he never had the pleasure of meeting him face-to-face, he felt, like many others, that he knew him through his unwavering dedication to the United States of America.
"Like anybody you respect, somebody that much, you never meet them but you do know about him and you know who he was," said Rivera.
Even members of the Pow Mia Kia Honor Guard voluntarily took six hour shifts waiting outside.
"Today is a historical day," said one visitor. "Everyone should get a newspaper today because his name will be on there and it will be history. I just wanted to come by and see some history this morning."
The senator will be moved to the Arizona State Capitol building Wednesday, August 29th, where the public is welcome to pay respects in the Rotunda from 1:00-8:00 p.m.
