Man dies from heat-related illness while hiking in Superstition Mnts.

PINAL COUNTY, Ariz. (KSAZ) - Pinal County Sheriff's deputies say a Phoenix man died from what appeared to be a heat-related illness during a day-long hike in the Superstition Mountains.

Deputies say 25-year-old Anthony Quatela III died while from symptoms of heat-related illness while hiking the Peralta Trail with a friend.

They say they began their hike at 7:30 a.m., but ran out of water, and both began to feel sick by about 1:30 p.m.

The victim lost consciousness and died before rescue crews could reach them. The victim's friend was treated for exposure and dehydration.

Pinal County deputies are investigating how the man died, but they believe exposure, dehydration and the extreme heat all contributed to his death.

Deputies say they responded to three different incidents involving people suffering from the heat on Saturday in the Superstition Mountains.

The other patients who were assisted are expected to recover.
